We’re several years past the COVID pandemic at this point, and many companies are calling their remote workers back to the office. Still, there is merit in having a remote workforce, even if it’s not strictly “mandatory” or “necessary” any longer. Today, we want to share some tips to help your business thrive with a remote workforce and what you can do to optimize your odds of success with this work environment.
First, you’ll need to acknowledge that remote employees are just as important as your in-house team. Even if they’re not physically present, they still contribute to the mission of your business. Therefore, you should do your utmost to ensure they are involved in the same processes and meetings that you would expect of your in-house team. The only difference between your remote team and your in-house team is their physical location; do your best to maintain the status quo, and for new hires, establish the status quo as soon as possible.
Just like your in-house team, your remote team needs access to the tools and solutions to do their jobs. Without this access, they’re simply not going to be productive. Depending on the solutions you need, you can either grant cloud access to tools, install them on issued laptops, or have them accessible through remote access. Another thing: you’ll want a virtual private network, or VPN, to ensure secure access to all necessary tools and resources.
Communication is important, particularly in a remote setting where you can’t just knock on someone’s door and ask them a question. This is why communication tools are at the top of the business tool tier list. We recommend you implement solutions like Voice over Internet Protocol, enterprise-grade email, video conferencing, and instant messaging to have all avenues of communication covered throughout the course of remote operations.
Finally, security, which is perhaps the biggest hurdle that businesses with remote operations face. You need a way to ensure all remote employees use devices that comply with your security policies. After all, remote work inherently brings about more risks, as you relinquish control over certain parts of the way your employees conduct work to them. Ensure they are following best practices, like passwords and multi-factor authentication, and have access logs to ensure no funny business is going on behind your back.
