Customize Your Chrome New Tab Page to Boost Daily Productivity

How many times a day do you open a fresh Google Chrome tab? If you are anything like me—or most of the business owners and office workers I talk to—it is easily 30, 40, or 50 times before lunch.

Every single time you hit that little plus icon, Chrome decides what you see. By default, that usually means a messy cluster of random websites you visited once last week, a search bar, and a handful of micro-distractions.

It does not have to be that way. Taking two minutes right now to tidy up your new tab page can save you a surprising amount of daily friction.

Go ahead and open up a new Chrome tab on your computer right now so you can follow along with me.

How to Customize Your Chrome New Tab Page (Step-by-Step)

First, open a fresh tab. You can do this by clicking the + icon at the top of your screen, or by using a keyboard shortcut:

  • Windows - Press Ctrl + T
  • Mac - Press Cmd + T

Look at the very bottom-right corner of your browser window. You will see a small icon shaped like a pencil (it says Customize Chrome if you hover your mouse over it). Click that pencil icon.

A side panel will slide out on the right side of your screen. This is where we can clean things up.

Fixing Your Shortcuts

By default, Chrome tries to guess what you want to see based on your recent browsing history. Of course, visiting a vendor's website one single time does not mean you want a shortcut to it parked on your screen for the next three weeks!

Under the Shortcuts section in that side panel, you will see two choices:

  • Most visited sites - The automatic default that constantly shifts around based on what you click.
  • My shortcuts - The option you actually want. This lets you pin curated shortcuts that you choose.

Select My shortcuts. Now, when you look at your new tab page, you can click the Add shortcut tile to pin the exact portals, web applications, and tools you use every single day.

If there is an old shortcut you want to clear out, hover over its tile, click the three tiny dots that appear, and select Remove. Simple as that.

Ditching the Noise and Adjusting Your Theme

While you still have that side panel open, scroll down until you see Cards.

Chrome sometimes tries to display extra content on new tab pages; things like suggested articles, recent files from your Google Drive, or shopping deals. If that extra clutter breaks your focus, simply toggle those cards off.

While you are here, click Change theme at the top of the panel to pick a clean color scheme. I usually recommend a neutral dark tone (under the Dark collection) because it is much easier on the eyes during long workdays.

It might sound like a small thing to spend a few minutes tweaking browser settings, but think about the cumulative effect across your entire company.

When your staff opens a browser tab dozens of times a day, any micro-distraction—a weird news headline, a missing link, a cluttered interface—breaks their momentum. Those tiny interruptions add up to real lost time over a workweek.

Plus, showing your team how to use built-in, native Chrome tools reduces the temptation for them to go install unvetted, third-party browser extensions just to get basic customization.

Solving IT problems does not always require throwing money at flashy new tools. Sometimes it is just a matter of taking what you already have and using it in a cleaner, more effective way.
